SECONDARY EDUCATION IN SERBIA

Secondary schools (also known as High Schools) correspond to American High Schools and are divided in three types:

* Academic school last for four years and offer general and broad education. Student usually chooses their education orientation between languages and social sciences and mathematics and natural sciences.
* Professional schools last for four years and specialize students in certain fields, while still offering relatively broad education.
* Vocational schools last for three years, without an option of continuing education and specialize in narrow vocations.
Subjects:
In Academic schools students have about 10 subjects a year and they are all compulsory except religion and civic education.
The subjects which a student has all four years if he chooses mathematics and natural sciences are: mathematics, Serbian, biology, physics, chemistry, computer science, PE (physical education), English, a second foreign language (a student chooses between French, German and Russian), history and geography. On some years students have psychology, logics, philosophy, sociology, Serbian constitution, art, music, Latin, but they last only a year or two. If a student chooses mathematics and natural sciences those subjects are more often during the week than languages and social subjects.
If a student chooses languages and social sciences his/her compulsory subjects all four years are: English, a second foreign language( French, Russian or German), Serbian, PE( physical education), computer sciences, art, music, history, geography, mathematics, physics. On some years students have psychology, logics, philosophy, sociology, Serbian constitution, Latin, but they last only a year or two. If a student chooses languages and social sciences those subjects are more often during the week than mathematics and other natural sciences.
There are some special schools in bigger cities for students who are talented for languages or natural sciences. For example, there is The Philological High School in Belgrade where a student can take a language to be his main subject (i.e. Spanish, Latin or Japanese) and other subjects are mostly connected to languages and social sciences. If you choose The Mathematical High School subjects are connected to natural sciences and little time is spent on languages and social sciences.
